Studying The Bible

One way to study the Bible is with specific questions in mind, for example, questions about doctrine, history, or moral and spiritual guidance. The Bible should be studied not to support our belief but to determine it. One of the most popular reasons people study the Bible is to learn about the historical events its records, especially concerning Jesus Christ and the apostle Paul. It must be remembered, that understanding what happened is not the same as understanding its full meaning. A clear example is the empty tomb. Jesus enemies did not deny the fact, but gave a different interpretation: they said that Jesus body had been stolen. But the empty tomb combined with the appearance of the risen Christ means that Jesus conquered death and raised triumphantly from the grave. People also study the Bible for moral and spiritual guidance. All that is necessary for Salvation and Christian living is clearly set forth in the scriptures. One does not need to be a scholar or pastor to understand it. We should remember how commands relate to grace. Just as the Ten Commandments ( Exodus 20 ) followed the deliverance from Egypt ( Exodus Chapter 1 through Chapter 19 ), so the ethical teachings are addressed to people who are recipients of God's grace and Salvation. We are saved by grace through faith for good works ( Ephesians 2:8-10 ). We love God because He first loved us ( 1John 4:19 ). Another principle is that we should pay most attention to those teachings that Jesus and the inspired writers emphasized. The command to love God with all one's heart, soul, and mind and one's neighbor as oneself is the essence of biblical morality ( Leviticus 19:18, Deuteronomy 6:5, Joshua 22:5, Mark 12:28-31, John 15:12, and Romans 13:8-10 ).
