God & His Names

God is the personal Creator and Lord of the universe, the Redeemer of his people, the ultimate author and principal subject of the scriptures, and the object of the church's confession, worship and service. YAHWEH is God's name that He revealed to Moses ( Exodus 3:15 ). It is mention over 6,000 times in the Old Testament. In ancient times the written Hebrew language did not include vowels. Only the consonants were used, so this name appeared as YHWH. Reverence for the devine name led to the practice of avoiding its use lest one run afoul of commandments such as in  ( Exodus 20:7 or Leviticus 24:16 ). Lord is another title of God. YAHWEH is the name of God most frequently used in the Hebrew scriptures. This word or title is commonly represented by Lord in English translations of the Bible. The meaning of Lord is, one who has power or authority. Adonai is another important name or title for God as Lord in the Old Testament. It derives from the Hebrew term adon, an early word denoting ownership, hence, absolute control. It is applied to God as the owner and governor of the whole Earth ( Psalm 114:7 ). Another way God identified or described Himself to Moses is " I AM," ( Exodus 3:13-14 ). Jesus spoke the same phrase, claiming equality with God ( John 8:58 ). The root idea behind this name is uncreated existence. When it is said that God's name is " I AM," more than simple existence is affirmed. He is in a sense in which no other being is. He is, and the cause of his being is in himself. He is because He is. This name affirms God's Lordship over His people   ( Exodus 34:23 ), as well as his power over the whole creation ( Joshua 3:13 ). By this name God vows His superiority over all other gods                 ( Deuteronomy 10:17, Psalm 96:5 ).
